Citizenship is the status that is given to a person at birth or by naturalization, and it involves certain rights, duties, and privileges. The process in which a person becomes a U.S. citizen after birth is called naturalization. Before a person can go through the naturalization process, he/she must fulfill certain requirements which are outlined below. Once a person meets these requirements and completes the application process, he/she can become a U.S. citizen.
There are many reasons why a person could want to become a U.S. citizen. The primary reason would be that once a person is a citizen, he/she is entitled to certain benefits such as: employment with the U.S. government, the legal right to vote, the right to petition for visas to bring immediate family members into the U.S., protection against deportation, and traveling liberties.
Naturalization Requirements
Before a person can become a naturalized citizen, he/she must:
- be at least 18 years of age
- must reside in the U.S. continuously for the past 3 or 5 years’
- must be able to read, write, and speak English
- must have good moral character and reveal criminal history
- must understand the U.S. Constitution and it’s principles
- must take an Oath of Allegiance
- must pass a test based upon U.S. History and Government
After a person fulfills all of these requirements and completes the application process, he/she will become a U.S. citizen. As a U.S. citizen, the person must: pay taxes, serve in the U.S. armed forces if called upon by the Government, obey U.S. laws, and defend his/her rights and the rights of others. Minors may also be naturalized through derivative citizenship through one parent. If a minor is a permanent resident and one of his/her parents becomes naturalized prior to their eighteenth birthday ,then the minor derives U.S. Citizenship automatically.
